Learning How to Submit Samples Step by Step

Start here. Learn about collecting, labeling and packaging samples for:

Clinical testing

Forensic testing

  • Sample containers for postmortem include gray, lavender, and zebra-top collection devices containing potassium oxalate and sodium fluoride.
  • For vitreous samples, quantitative results for sodium and for potassium in vitreous specimens will be affected if performed with specimen collection devices containing sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate. We recommend a preservative-free plastic collection device containing no additives.

Crime Labs Submission

NMS does not accept samples for analysis from private individuals. Samples must be submitted by attorneys, law enforcement, medical professional, and licensed private investigators.
